Mississippi River Mural

Mural Design, Mural Installation, Painting, Illustration

01. The Challenge

I designed and painted a mural of the Mississippi River, centering on Bdóte. It curves through the Twin Cities and interlaces with vibrant lily pads. It can be tedious to transfer a sketch to a painted mural, so an orgnized plan is necessary.

01. The Strategy

After measuring the garage wall, I created a Procreate document where one inch was equal to one square foot of wall. After sketching my river and water lily scene at this scale, I went to the hardware store to choose paint colors that closely matched my sketch.

01. The Result

I started by painting the whole wall blue, and then mapped out my mural with pencil on that background layer. I labeled the shapes with the colors that would fill each shape, and finally painted each color with two coats for an even color tone and vibrance. Now the garage is a stunning backgound for cozy bonfire evenings.
